As you may have guessed from the movies, there are specific dress codes for the different types of dance. The dress codes are traditional, but are also for instructional and safety purposes. The proper attire and hair allow the instructor to see exactly what the dancer is doing so they can provide appropriate feedback and to ensure that the dancer is not doing something that will lead to injury. Dance is a very active pursuit and we want to ensure your complete safety both in the short term and long run.
Parent & Tot:
Girls – Any color/styled leotard, optional skirt or tutu, pink tights and pink ballet slippers with elastics across the instep. Hair in a bun ecurely fastened to stay put for entire class. If hair is too short for a bun it must be worn tied back and off the face.
Boys – T-shirt, sweats/shorts, ballet slippers with elastics across the instep.
Parents – comfy clothing to move in, socks.
3&4 Year Olds:
Girls – Any color/styled leotard, optional skirt or tutu, pink tights and pink ballet slippers with elastics across the instep and tap shoes. Hair in a bun ecurely fastened to stay put for entire class. If hair is too short for a bun it must be worn tied back and off the face.
Boys – White form fitting T-shirt or white short-sleeved leotard with navy or black shorts. White ballet slippers, either canvas or leather with white elastic and white ankle socks and tap shoes.
Performance Dance Levels:
Boys:
T-shirt and shorts/leggings/sweatpants. Appropriate shoes for class being taken.
Girls:
Ballet – Any style/coloured leotard, ballet tights, skirt is optional, ballet slippers and hair in a bun
Jazz – Any style/coloured leotard, tights, dance shorts or leggings, black jazz shoes (Canvas or leather), hair pulled back off the face.
Tap – Any style/coloured leotard, tights, dance shorts or leggings, black tap shoes, hair pulled back off the face.
Modern/Contemporary – Any style/coloured leotard, convertible tights, dance shorts or leggings, socks, hair pulled back off the face.
Acro – Any style/coloured leotard, convertible tights, dance shorts or leggings, bare feet, hair pulled back off the face.
Hip Hop – comfy clothing, no denim, clean indoor runners, hair pulled back off the face
Competitive and Intensive Dance Levels:
Ballet Grades will have specific leotard colors for exams. This information will be available later in the fall.
All Ballet students will require their own character skirt and shoes for classes by October 15th.
Levels 1 – 3 Ballet (Girls):
Any color/styled leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers with elastics across the instep. Skirt is optional. Black character skirt and character shoes. Please see character requirements.
Levels 4 -6 Ballet (Girls):
Any color/styled leotard, pink tights and pink leather OR canvas ballet slippers with elastic across the instep. Skirt is optional. Black character skirt and character shoes. Please see character requirements.
Levels 1- 6 Ballet (Boys):
White form fitting T-shirt or white short-sleeved leotard with navy or black shorts. White ballet slippers, either canvas or leather with white elastic and white ankle socks and character shoes.
Character Requirements (Girls):
Black full or circular skirt made of heavy gabardine or polyester / cotton blend with three rows of red ribbon trim. Skirt hem is approximately three inches below the knee. Grade 1 and 2 ballet students need a low heel character shoe with pink elastic across the instep. Grade 3-8 ballet students need a 1.25 inch Cuban heel character shoe with pink elastic across the instep. Please refer to www.radcanada.org under Graded, Recommended Uniform.
RAD Vocational Levels:
Intermediate Foundations, Intermediate Advanced Foundations, Advanced 1, Advanced 2 – Any color/styled leotard, pink tights, pink canvas ballet slippers, hard point shoes. See www.radcanada.org for more details.
Pointe Classes:
Any color/styled leotard and pink leather or canvas ballet slippers and Pointe shoes. When dancers are ready for pointe shoes, the Instructor will let the dancers know and arrange a fitting with them at Performing Fabrics.
Modern Contemporary (All Levels):
Girls – May wear any color/styled leotard and tights, stretch leggings, or dance shorts and socks.
Boys – Optional coloured T-Shirt and black dance pants and socks.
Jazz and Musical Theatre (All levels):
Any color/styled leotard with stretch leggings or dance shorts. Black oxford split sole jazz shoes either slip on or tie up. Hair must be secured in a ponytail off the face. Younger students may wear ballet attire to these classes.
Lyrical Jazz (All levels):
Any color/styled leotard with stretch leggings, tights or dance shorts and beige canvas jazz shoes. Hair must be secured in a ponytail off the face.
Contemporary (All Levels):
Students may wear any color/styled leotard and tights, stretch leggings, or dance shorts and socks.
Tap (All levels):
Any color/styled leotard with stretch leggings or dance shorts. Hair must be secured in a ponytail off the face. 3-7 years old, black patent tap shoes. 8 years and up, black oxford tap shoes.
**All competitive and Exam students must have oxford tap shoes.
Hip-Hop (All levels):
Comfortable pants, T-shirt, and clean white running shoes (not to be worn outside). No jeans. Hair must be secured off the face. **For competition/year-end show the students will require a new pair of runners as part of their costume.
Acro (All levels):
Any color/styled leotard, leggings, convertible tights or shorts and bare feet. Hair must be secured in a ponytail or bun off the face.
Adult Classes:
T-shirt and stretch jazz pants/leggings or capri pants. Appropriate footwear for the class being taken. Hair secured off the face.
There is no jewellery or watches to be worn to class. Small earrings are acceptable.
